Post Pregnant Aggression

hello everyone out there in the web world!

I have a question that I am having a hard time getting answered. I've heard about dogs getting irritable and aggressive after having a litter of puppies but I want to know why. Is it because they are in "protective mode"? Are they more aggressive because in the wild they have to be able to protect themselves in their fragile state and the puppies in theirs?

I have found a good deal of info on the periods leading up to delivery but not a lot about what to expect after the puppies have come. How long does the change in attitude last? If the puppies are taken away immediately (like when a momma gives birth in a shelter and the puppies get adopted) does this change anything? How long should the attitude problem be allowed to persist? In other words, at what point is it no longer a natural instinct but instead a behavior problem?

Ive never had a dog that wasnt fixed so I am truly ignorant to this characteristic. Any info would be a help. Thanks!

Houses/Apartments

More of a question than an answer (as usual) but I was wondering if anyone knew of ways to find pet friendly apartments or houses. Ive checked on Craigslist and SD Reader and they do have a lot of possibilities but I wanted to make sure Im not missing some great resource. I wouldnt mind paying a fee (like for SD properties or something) if I got a recommendation and knew it was worth it. I dont have a pit bull so breed restrictions aren't a problem but I do have two dogs and one of them does exceed the usual "25 or under" weight rule. Any suggestions?

Agility Clubs?

Does anyone know of any local agility clubs that don't require your dog to be AKC registered? My aussie and I have taken the basic agility class that Metropawlitan Dog offers and would love to find a club to join, but aren't really looking to compete. Any suggestions?

Poop eating!!

So my Australian Shepherd is fantastic in every aspect other than the fact he eats poop! He doesn't eat his own, but he'll eat my other dog's poop literally before it hits the ground, and will eat poop off the ground at the dog park. Other than being gross, I know this poses a real risk to him for getting sick and getting worms and other parasites. He eats a fairly premium dog food (Canidae) and I give him raw bones to chew on about once a week. My other dog is on the same diet and has no poop eating issues. Is there anything I can do? Should I take him to the vet to see if there's some health problem causing this?

Hi Everyone!

I have an adorable (when he wants to be) 10 month old pit bull puppy who has taken to chewing our walls! He will just walk up to the wall and start gnawing on it. Sometimes I catch him doing it, sometimes he is too stealth for me Why is he doing this? What can I do to stop it? Help!!! My walls thank you

Housebreaking HELP!

Ok. So I don't really have a puppy. I have two dogs - a 4 yr old Border Collie Mix and a 1 yr old ShiTzu. My mix is awesome - a perfect lady! The ShiTzu on the other hand could be better. He is one year old and still potties in the house. I tried crate training him with no luck. If he is in his crate, he will potty in there too. I got him from a breeder when he was a puppy. I thought I followed all of the rules for housebreaking but obviously I was mistaken. Would neutering him help? I have resorted to potty pads which are hit or miss but I'd rather not have a doggy toilet in the middle of my living room! How do I get him to potty outside???? Help!!!!

Nervous Peeing

First time poster, Long time dog lover!

Hey all!

My roommates dog is a nervous wreck! He cowers every time anyone tries to pick him up or pet him and often times pees (which really sucks when you are trying to pick him up off your bed). We have tried just calling him off the bed but even the attention from that makes him so nervous he looses control and urinates. I have dealt with excited peeing dogs before but never submissive peeing... any advice? I dont know his past but I know he is a pet store pup, my roommate has owned him since he was a puppy, and for the past two years Ive lived with him I have never seen him mistreated. In fact you could even say his mom is a little too loving!

Also, he is a Jack Russel/ Chi Mix... if that matters...

Nasty Neighbors

Hi! I wasnt sure where this post should go so I hope this is OK. I just moved into a new house with a large fenced back yard that I was hoping would be the perfect afternoon retreat for my 5 year old black lab. However, soon after I moved in... we met the unfortunate dog that lives directly behind us... She is a ten year old retriever mix and is extremely dog aggressive (or possibly only barrier aggressive). When she realizes my dog is in the yard, she snarls/barks/snaps/etc up against the chain link fence our yards share. The fence is partially covered by ivy and other foliage but in some parts is completely see through. My dog is known to bark when other dogs bark but she is not aggressive ever. Im not worried she will fight with the neighbors dog but I am worried she might go over to investigate and get her nose bit. I have lived here for a month and I am still taking my dog out on a leash to avoid any problems. What else can I do?! And what is the point of having a beautiful and large, fenced-in back yard if my dog cant enjoy it off leash? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading everyone!

PS the neighbor knows nothing about dog training and could care less that his dog is causing problems... therefore dont count on him to be of any help.
